Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

The data paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
