No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
