New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of hunger.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
